New Leaf Metabolic Assessments

Your metabolism is as unique as your fingerprint and these assessments eliminate the guesswork common to so many programs. There is simply no accurate method of estimating your metabolic rate, your optimal daily caloric intake, your optimal heart rate training zones, or how many calories you burn during exercise. In fact, the equations used to estimate these variables have a significant margin of error: Equations used to estimate Resting Metabolic Rate and recommended caloric intake have a 1000-calorie margin of error! Heart rate training zone estimations using the 220-Age equation have a standard error of 10 bpm and a potential error of 20 bpm! Calorie counters on exercise equipment and heart rate monitors can overestimate caloric expenditure by as much as 30%!

We use medical technology from New Leaf (Medical Graphics Corporation) to measure your metabolism at rest and during exercise, which identifies the optimal number of calories you should eat each day and the optimal exercise intensity (heart rate) for you. By measuring your individual metabolic profile, we know how to work with your body to achieve real results. The two assessments are:

Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) Assessment

This assessment accurately measures how many calories your body requires on a daily basis, which is the foundation for determining your optimal caloric intake. You wear a comfortable neoprene mask that covers your nose and mouth while relaxing in a reclined position in a dark room for 15 minutes. If your goal is fitness or athletic performance, this assessment provides critical data necessary to ensure recovery from training and preservation of lean muscle. If your goal is weight loss, this assessment avoids the pitfall common to many diet programs that prescribe calorie intakes that are too low, which triggers a “famine” response in the body leading to a reduction in the body’s overall metabolic rate, a reduction in the amount of fat burned during exercise, an increase in fat storage, and a loss of lean muscle tissue.

VO2 Exercise Assessment

This assessment accurately measures how many calories your body burns during exercise and the relative percentages of fat and carbohydrate utilization at any given heart rate, provides critical data for replenishing glycogen stores, and identifies key metabolic markers such as your true “fat-burning” zone, aerobic threshold, anaerobic threshold and VO2max. Depending on your goal and current level of fitness, this is a either a sub-maximal (i.e. moderate effort) or maximal exercise assessment conducted on a treadmill. You wear a comfortable neoprene mask that covers your nose and mouth and a heart rate monitor while walking or running on a treadmill as the incline/workload is continually increased over the course of 12-14 mins. This assessment provides the data necessary to create a personalized exercise program based on your body and your goal, whether it’s weight loss, fitness improvement, or athletic performance.
