Class Descriptions

Learn-To-Skate

  • Parent/Tot: For 3-5 year olds who have never skated. This class allows parents to support their children as they learn. Parents must be able to skate.
  • Tot 1 and 2: For 3-5 year olds who have never skated. This class uses a variety of games to teach basic skating skills and comfort on the ice.
  • Tot 3 and 4: Also for 3-5 year olds, skills taught in Tot 1 and 2 will be built upon to prepare skaters for Pre-Alpha.
  • Pre-Alpha 1: For beginning skaters. The basic skills include skating forward and backward, and gliding on one foot. Skaters must be 5 years old or have passed Tot 4.
  • Pre-Alpha 2: Skaters will continue to build upon skills taught in Pre-Alpha I. Stopping will also be introduced.
  • Alpha: Skater should be able to skate forward and backward, stop, and glide on one foot. Skills taught include forward stroking, forward crossovers, and one foot snowplow stops.
  • Beta: Skills taught include backward stroking, backward crossovers, and T-stops, and two-foot turns.
  • Gamma: Skills taught include forward outside three turns, forward mohawks, the gamma footwork sequence, and hockey stops.
  • Delta: Skills taught include forward inside three turns, forward edges, shoot the duck, lunge, and bunny hop.
  • Adult: The above levels are offered for adults 13 and older.

All classes are progressive; therefore completion of previous levels is required for enrollment in each level.

Specialty Classes

  • * Moves in the Field: This speciality class gives students the opportunity to learn and practice correct moves, patterns and edgework. Prerequisite: Must have passed FS 1.
  • * Ice Dance: This speciality class gives students the opportunity to learn and practice correct dance patterns and edgework. Prerequisite: Must have passed Delta.
  • Off-Ice Conditioning: For figure skaters who wish to improve their endurance, balance and strength through off-ice exercise. For Delta and above.
  • Jumps, Spins and Footwork: Skaters can begin to learn proper jump and spin technique as well as correct footwork patterns for their freestyle level. Prerequisite: Must have passed FS4.
  • Synchronized Skating: Be part of the fastest growing skating discipline. Learn the basics of skating on a team and meet some new friends. Prerequisite: Must have passed Gamma.
  • -NEW- ISI Essentials: This class will focus on teaching skaters about different events and opportunities available for those interested in competing in ISI competitions. We will be covering events such as couples, team compulsories, spotlight, interpretive and footwork. We will also share opportunities to compete in the area. Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or you’re just checking it out, this class is for you! Must have passed FS 3.
  • Off Ice Dance Class: Learn body movement and artistry. This class will be led by a UI Dance Major and is for any skater that has passed Delta or above.
  • Skating Stars: Take your skating to the next level. Learn how to connect elements into a programs as well as other fun and exciting moves. This class is for any skater in levels Beta-Delta.
  • Hockey Skating Class: Learn skating skills specfically for hockey. This class is for any beginning skater. No experience necessary. Note: Hockey skates and other equipment can be worn if skaters wish.

* Moves in the Field and Ice Dance will be offered at the same time and skaters must register for both. However, skaters will be able to choose which class they participate in from week to week.
